40x60 Pole Barn Kit: Layout, Post Count, 14 or 16 ft Eave, Starting Price
A 40 by 60 is 2,400 sq ft under roof: a serious equipment shed, a hay barn that holds a season, or a shop with room for a lift bay and a boat. It is the largest width we stock trusses for. Here is how the kit lays out and how to get your exact delivered price.

How a 40x60 lays out: two valid answers
Sixty feet divides evenly two ways, and the configurator checks both:
- Three bays of 20 ft with 6 in C-purlin: four truss lines, eight posts. Fewer trusses and posts, heavier purlin.
- Four bays of 15 ft with 4 in C-purlin: five truss lines, ten posts. One more truss and two more posts, lighter and cheaper purlin.
Which one is cheaper depends on the day's truss, post and purlin pricing, so the configurator runs both and shows the lower one. Your materials list spells out which layout you are getting so your crew sets the posts on the right centers.
Each 40 ft truss carries two slopes of about 21 ft of rafter at 4/12 pitch; with the 16 in overhang the panels cut to roughly 22 ft 4 in. Purlin rows run the full 60 ft on each slope at no more than 48 in on center. Ridge cap covers the peak; rake trim finishes both gable ends.
14 ft or 16 ft eave?
Fourteen feet is the common choice at this width: it clears a combine, a dump truck or a fifth-wheel. The configurator prices 14 ft on 6x6x20 posts. Go to 16 ft, the height a lot of people search for in a 40x60x16 pole barn kit, and the posts move up to 8x8x20 to carry the extra height. That adds post cost and a little panel length but nothing else in the kit changes. Enter 16 in the configurator and watch the price move; it is usually a smaller step than people expect.
How PRC sizes a kit
- Trusses: 4/12-pitch steel web trusses matched to the width, one at every truss line including both ends.
- Posts: treated 6x6x16 to a 13 ft eave, 6x6x20 to a 15 ft eave, 8x8x20 above that. Two bags of concrete per post. One post under each end of each truss.
- Bays: the space between truss lines. Bays up to 15 ft use 4 in C-purlin; bays up to 20 ft use 6 in. 8 in purlin is never used on trusses. The configurator picks the lower-cost combination for your length.
- Purlin rows: never farther apart than 48 in on center, running the full length of the building on each slope.
- Roof: 26 ga ribbed metal panels, 36 in coverage, cut to the slope length with a 16 in framing overhang. Galvalume (25-year finish) or White SMP (45-year finish). 29 ga available.
- Trim and hardware: ridge cap and gable rake trim in 10 ft 2 in pieces, truss-center and truss-to-post bolt sets, washer screws by the 250-count bag.
Working rules used by PRC to count materials, not an engineering design. Your permit office may require sealed drawings; see the permit note on the pole barn kits page.
Getting a 40x60 kit to your site
Forty-foot trusses and 22 ft panels are a long load. PRC delivers it, cut to length, to your site. Delivery: $200 within 120 miles of our yard, $285 beyond, final delivery cost confirmed at order based on location. Standard sizes are usually ready 2–3 weeks after the deposit clears; custom sizes are confirmed at order. See Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama or Texas delivery details.
What a 40x60 kit does not include
Slab, sidewall and endwall panels, girts, doors, insulation, gutters, engineering and permits are not in the kit price. Enclosure is quoted on request. At this footprint, more jurisdictions ask for sealed drawings than at 30x40; check with your permit office before you order.
40x60 pole barn questions
How many posts does a 40x60 pole barn need?
Eight with three 20 ft bays on 6 in purlins, or ten with four 15 ft bays on 4 in purlins. The configurator picks the cheaper combination from today's pricing and the materials list states which.
How much does a 40x60 pole barn kit cost?

Delivery: $200 within 120 miles of our yard, $285 beyond, final delivery cost confirmed at order based on location. Installation is a separate line.
What about a 40x60x16 pole barn kit?
Set the eave to 16 in the configurator. Posts step up to 8x8x20 above a 15 ft eave; everything else in the kit stays the same.
Is a 40x60 too big to build myself?
Not necessarily, but the trusses and panels are long and heavy enough that you want a telehandler or a tractor with forks and at least three people. Many owner-builders at this size set the posts themselves and hire out the truss lift. The installed option covers the whole job if you would rather. Installed price shown as an estimate, confirmed after a site visit.
Pole barn vs metal building at 40x60?
For an open roof, post-frame is cheaper on materials and foundation. For a fully enclosed, insulated shop with big doors, a red-iron building becomes competitive. Our comparison covers the trade-offs.
